A few weeks ago I was able to interview 4 authors that I greatly admire. Alton Gansky – he has written some books that were so much fun to read because they stretch the bounds of the ‘average’ story. More than one kept me awake at night because of the creepiness of it. Bill Meyers – not only because of his interesting adult books, but because of a wonderful series he wrote for boys. The My Life as…. series got my son reading in elementary school. Frank Peretti because he showed me that Christian fiction can be interesting, fun, exciting and a bit scary. Angela Hunt – because she has written some of the most challenging books I have read.
It was so much fun just watching them banter with each other. They were all very secure with themselves, but also in the friendship they share. They were comfortable and made me feel very welcome in their little group for the few moments I joined them.
I asked several questions but there were a few I would like to share here with you all. But first a bit of a review of the new hard copy of a series of stories they have been working on online. Invitation; Harbingers Cycle One is an idea they had to reach more readers and to take advantage of the internet. They each take a character and write a short story from their character’s point of view and write the other author’s characters with their own voice. They do try to stay as close as possible to what the author who has that character does.
* When I asked if anyone had any complaints about how others write their characters, they all answered no. It was something they worked out early. Like the example that Alton said. He felt that sometimes the other authors were making his character too much of a dumb jock.
So we meet Brenda – A tattoo artist – written by Bill – probably their favorite just because she is so sassy and fun to write.
The Professor – an ex-priest turned atheist – Written by Frank Peretti – was the creepiest of story lines.
Andi – Sees patterns in everything. – Angel Hunt – Fun to see what patterns she is seeing and how it all fits together.
Tank – ex- college football player – Alton Gansky – Protector with a heart of gold and has a special gift of healing.
Our 4 characters will do battle with Demons and evil in the world. Why is there more darkness in the world? Why is it more active? Why were they chosen? All great questions and answered (sort of) in this first book, but the adventure will continue throughout the next 5 books.
I did asked Angela what her favorite genre to write was and I think her answer also explains why this group wanted to write books along these lines. She said she liked to write books that exercise the brain. Books that keep you thinking but are interesting to read. It was not something she takes lightly because she does write interesting reads. The whole group quickly agreed with her and that is also very clear by their other books.
To say I am looking forward to the rest of the series is an understatement. To be honest they can’t publish these books fast enough for me.
One last question I have been asking in my interview is “Where is the strangest place that you have seen one of your books?” Angela – Flea Market. Alton – had no answer. Bill – (this is a great story) On an airplane. A lady was reading it and when Bill sat next to her on the plane she recognize him and they talked books along with her 3 kids. They had been reading his books for years and were so excited to meet him.
You just never know who you will meet when you are willing to say hello. 🙂
