The Curse of Misty Wayfair – Jaime Jo Wright – Left at an orphanage as a child, Thea Reed vowed to find her mother someday. Now grown, her search takes her to turn-of-the-century Pleasant Valley, Wisconsin. When the clues she finds lead her to a mental asylum, Thea uses her experience as a postmortem photographer to gain access and assist groundskeeper Simeon Coyle in photographing the patients and uncovering the secrets within. However, she never expected her personal quest would reawaken the legend of Misty Wayfair, a murdered woman who allegedly haunts the area and whose appearance portends death.  A century later, Heidi Lane receives a troubling letter from her mother–who is battling dementia–compelling her to travel to Pleasant Valley for answers to her own questions of identity. When she catches sight of a ghostly woman haunting the asylum ruins in the woods, the long-standing story of Misty Wayfair returns–and with it, Heidi’s fear for her own life.  As two women across time seek answers about their identities and heritage, they must overcome the threat of the mysterious curse that has them inextricably intertwined.

Love to Behold – Sharlene MacLaren – #3 Forever Freedom series – Two years after the Civil War, Lydia Albright, 27, is an established teacher in Boston when she senses God’s call to leave the comfort and security of her job and go south. She accepts a position to teach in a school for former slaves in Charleston, South Carolina. A church there that’s affiliated with the American Missionary Association offers support, along with room and board at the parsonage.  The Ku Klux men are hell-bent on seeing that the new school fails. Lydia’s life is threatened, and the parsonage, church, and school are vandalized.
But they haven’t contended with a strong, determined woman like Lydia before. It also helps that she has a couple potential suitors on her side.

With This Pledge – Tamera Alexander – #1 Canton Novel – Elizabeth “Lizzie” Clouston’s quietly held principles oppose those of the Southern Cause–but when forty thousand soldiers converge on the fields of Franklin, Tennessee, the war demands an answer. The Carnton home, where she is governess, is converted into a Confederate field hospital; and Lizzie must gather up her fortitude to assist the military doctor with surgeries that determine life or death–even as she fears for the life of Towny, her fianc and lifelong friend.  A young soldier’s last wish is that she convey an urgent message to his mother. She vows to do so, but Lizzie knows little more than the boy’s first name. That same night, decorated Mississippi sharpshooter Captain Roland Ward Jones extracts a different promise from Lizzie: that she intervene should the surgeon decide to amputate his leg. Lizzie is nothing if not a woman of her word, earning the soldiers’ respect as she tends to the wounded within Carnton’s walls. None is more admiring than Captain Jones, who doesn’t realize she is already pledged to another. When Towny vanishes after a crushing battle in Nashville, Lizzie must confront the costs of war. And torn between love, principles, and promises made, she struggles to be true to her own heart while standing for what she knows is right–no matter the cost.

Season of an Amish Garden – Amy Clipston – 4 in 1 novel –Spring Is in the Air  As the young people of Bird-in-Hand, Pennsylvania, plant a garden in memory of their friend, Katie Ann begins to worry that her older brother, Ephraim, is dating her best friend. What if she somehow loses them both? But Christian, a new boy in the community, also works in the garden–and falling for him may be exactly the distraction, and lesson, that Katie Ann needs.

Home by Summer  Clara Hertzler is surprised when Jerry Petersheim, her old friend, comes to the garden to drop off his younger sister–especially because Jerry has been gone for years, and now seems to be living as an Englisher. As the friends get to know each other again, Clara pushes Jerry to examine why he abandoned his Amish beliefs. Will Clara help Jerry renew his faith in God, and will they find love beneath the summer sun?

The Fruits of Fall  Tena Speicher has come to live in Bird-in-Hand after her fianc left her for an Englishwoman. When a homeless veteran comes to the fruit stand one day and asks for food, Tena is not sure how to respond–but Wayne intervenes and offers to let him stay in the barn. Afraid to trust Englishers, Tena must learn, with Wayne’s help, that everyone is a child of God and deserving of kindness.

Winter Blessings  Ephraim and Mandy have dated for some time and now have plans to marry. But after a series of unexpected events and misunderstandings, they wonder if they should go their separate ways. What will happen when their friends at the Amish garden conspire to bring them back together?

Jaime Jo Wright

Dear Readers,

I fell in love with Jaime Jo’s writing the minute I opened her first book, House on Foster Hill.  Couldn’t wait to read the 2nd, The Reckoning on Gossamer Pond, and eagerly waited for the 3rd. The Curse of Misty Wayfair9780764230301.  And boy was it worth the wait.

Creepy, engaging and just plain good writing.  I wanted to continue reading it even when I was time to put it down.  I also had to refrain from reading it at night because of the creepy ghost story.

There are so many layers to the story.  It is not only a ghost story it has a layer about an adult child still dealing with being abandoned as a child by a parent with mental illness.  It is has the layer of dealing with mental illness.  It has a layer about dealing with a parent with dementia.  It has an autistic character.  And of course it has the over all mystery to the entire book.  I love love love diving into books like this.

A dual time book with a very interesting tradition that makes the story even more creepy.  Our heroine Thea Reed is a photographer.  Not just any photographer but one who takes pictures of dead people to help families remember their dearly departed.  What she finds in one little town maybe more than she bargained for when she first started her search for her mother.

Our contemporary protagonist is Heidi and she is visiting her sister and mother, whom she has not seen for years, and instead healing, she finds a ghost and someone who does not want her there.

Well paced, with an edge of your seat story line.  You will find yourself wanting to continue as you have to know what happens and yet wanting to stop because you most certainly do not want another ghostly encounter with Misty.

Enjoy thoroughly because a dark and cold January night is the perfect time to read a ghost story.

Happy Reading,
